Many homeowners make the same dryer vent cleaning mistakes. Here is what to avoid and how to clean your vent effectively and safely.

Common Dryer Vent Cleaning Mistakes Homeowners Make

DIY dryer vent cleaning is well-intentioned, but several common mistakes reduce its effectiveness or create new problems. Knowing what to avoid is as useful as knowing the correct steps.

Mistake 1: Only Cleaning the First Few Feet

The most common mistake is treating the accessible section near the dryer as if it represents the whole duct. Pushing a brush a foot or two into the opening and pulling out some lint does not address the buildup deeper in the duct — particularly at bends and in the middle sections where lint accumulates most heavily. If your brush kit does not reach the full duct length, you have incomplete information about the actual condition of your duct.

Mistake 2: Brushing Without Vacuum Support

Running a brush through the duct without a vacuum positioned at the opening displaces lint rather than removing it. Lint pushed forward may exit through the exterior cap, but lint pushed backward ends up on your laundry room floor or redistributes inside the duct when the dryer runs again. Always have a vacuum running near the duct opening while brushing.

Mistake 3: Forgetting the Exterior Cap

Homeowners often clean the interior duct and forget the exterior cap entirely. Lint accumulates inside the cap housing, on the flap mechanism, and in the area just inside the cap exterior. A partially blocked cap creates backpressure that limits the benefit of cleaning the interior duct. Always check and clear the exterior cap as part of any cleaning.

Mistake 4: Reinstalling With a Kinked Duct

After cleaning, pushing the dryer back into its alcove without care can kink or compress the flexible duct section between the dryer and the wall. A kinked duct creates a restriction as significant as a lint blockage. Leave enough room behind the dryer that the duct is not compressed, and check that it is not crimped before running the first load.

Mistake 5: Using a Vacuum Attachment Instead of a Brush

Dryer vent vacuum attachments — the long flexible tubes you connect to a shop vac — can remove loose lint from accessible sections but do not dislodge compacted lint from duct walls or at bends. They are better than nothing for a quick clean, but they are not a substitute for a brush kit on rod extensions. Use a proper rotary brush for effective cleaning.

Mistake 6: Assuming One Cleaning Covers Multiple Years

A thorough cleaning today does not mean the vent is fine for five years. Lint accumulates with every load. Annual professional cleaning is the standard recommendation for most households — and some households need more frequent service. Set a reminder so cleaning stays on your maintenance schedule.
