Performance Warning Signs
- Clothes take more than one cycle to dry: The single most reliable performance indicator. If a normal load requires two cycles, airflow is restricted.
- Clothes feel damp or unusually hot at the end of a normal cycle: Damp indicates incomplete moisture removal; hot indicates heat is building up inside the drum instead of exhausting.
- Cycle times are gradually getting longer: If you notice drying cycles creeping longer over weeks or months, progressive lint accumulation is the likely cause.
- The dryer shuts off before the cycle completes: Many dryers have thermal cutoff switches that trip when the machine overheats — a symptom of restricted exhaust.
Physical Warning Signs
- The outside of the dryer is hot to the touch: The dryer cabinet should feel warm but not uncomfortably hot. Excessive exterior heat indicates heat is not being exhausted properly.
- The laundry room feels unusually hot or humid during a cycle: Indicates exhaust air is not leaving the building effectively.
- Visible lint accumulation around the dryer connection: Lint backing up to the dryer end of the duct is a clear sign of restriction further down the run.
- The exterior vent flap does not open during a cycle: Check from outside while the dryer is running. If the flap is not opening, the blower is not generating enough pressure — vent restriction is the most common cause.
Smell Warning Signs
- Burning smell from the dryer or laundry room: Indicates lint is getting close to or above its ignition temperature. Stop the dryer immediately.
- Musty smell from freshly dried clothes: Moisture is not being fully expelled — often caused by restricted airflow trapping humid air inside the drum.
Visual Inspection Warning Signs
- Visible rust or corrosion at the dryer exhaust connection: Indicates moisture condensation in the duct draining back toward the dryer.
- Nesting material visible at the exterior cap: Do not use the dryer until the nest is removed.
- White vinyl flexible duct behind your dryer: This duct material is prohibited by code and should be replaced with rigid metal regardless of current performance.
If you observe any of the above warning signs, schedule a professional dryer vent inspection and cleaning before continuing to use the appliance.
