The Standard Recommendation: Once a Year
For most single-family homes with average laundry usage, professional dryer vent cleaning once per year is a reasonable starting point. This frequency keeps lint accumulation in check, ensures airflow stays within safe operating range, and prevents the gradual buildup that leads to extended drying times and elevated fire risk.
Once-a-year cleaning is appropriate for households running three to four laundry loads per week with a relatively short duct run — say, under 15 feet with no more than two 90-degree elbows. If your setup differs from this, you may need more frequent service.
When You Should Clean More Frequently
Several factors push the recommended cleaning frequency higher than once a year:
- Large households: Five or more loads per week — common in families with children — produce significantly more lint. Twice-yearly cleaning is often appropriate.
- Pet owners: Pet hair and dander accumulate in the vent duct faster than standard lint. Homes with multiple shedding pets may need cleaning every six months.
- Long or complex duct runs: Ducts over 25 feet or those with multiple bends restrict airflow more easily and accumulate lint at a faster rate.
- Older flexible ducts: Foil accordion ducts have ridged interiors that catch lint aggressively. These need more frequent attention than smooth rigid metal ducts.
- Commercial and multi-unit properties: High-volume dryers running all day require quarterly or more frequent cleaning depending on load volume.
Performance Is the Best Indicator
Whatever cleaning schedule you follow, the best real-world indicator that it is time for service is dryer performance. If a normal load that previously dried in one cycle now takes two, do not wait for your scheduled appointment. That performance decline is a direct signal that airflow is restricted. Continued use in that state increases heat buildup and fire risk with every load.
