When to Replace Your Dryer Vent Duct Instead of Cleaning It

Sometimes cleaning a dryer vent duct is not enough. Here is when replacement is the right call and what warning signs to look for.

Cleaning or Replacing Your Dryer Vent Duct: How to Decide

Professional dryer vent cleaning is the right maintenance solution for most homes — but there are situations where cleaning alone does not address the underlying problem. Knowing when replacement is the appropriate next step saves you from repeating cleaning visits that cannot fully resolve a structural or material issue.

Flexible Foil or Plastic Duct

If your dryer is connected to or vented through flexible foil or plastic accordion duct — particularly if this material runs inside walls, ceilings, or floors — replacement with rigid metal duct is the recommended course regardless of lint accumulation level. These materials are not code-compliant for dryer exhaust in concealed spaces, catch and hold lint far more aggressively than smooth rigid metal, and are more flammable under elevated heat conditions. Cleaning foil or plastic duct improves it temporarily, but the material itself remains a higher-risk installation. Replacement resolves the root issue.

Kinked or Crushed Duct Sections

A dryer duct that has been pinched, kinked, or crushed — often behind a dryer pushed too close to the wall, or from construction work nearby — cannot be restored to full airflow capacity by cleaning. The physical constriction remains after lint is removed. If airflow testing after a professional cleaning still shows significant restriction, a kinked section is a likely cause. This requires accessing and replacing the damaged section of duct.

Duct That Vents Into Unconditioned Space

Occasionally a professional inspection reveals that a dryer vent duct has been disconnected from its exterior termination point and is venting into an attic, crawl space, or wall cavity. This is a serious problem: it introduces moisture and lint into spaces where neither belongs, creating mold risk and a concealed fire hazard. Cleaning the accessible sections of the duct does not fix the disconnection — the duct must be reconnected and properly terminated to the exterior.

Duct Age and Corrosion

Very old rigid metal duct can develop corrosion, perforations, or failed seams that create air leaks. These leaks allow moisture and lint to enter wall cavities rather than exhausting to the exterior. A professional inspection can identify failed duct sections; replacement is the only effective remedy for compromised duct integrity.

What Our Inspection Process Identifies

A professional dryer vent inspection by our Bloomington team includes evaluation of duct material, routing, condition, and termination — giving you a clear picture of what cleaning can resolve and what requires replacement. We do not recommend replacement unless it is genuinely warranted. Contact us to schedule an inspection and get a complete assessment of your duct system's condition.
